Reciprocating compressor valves are the most frequently replaced component on most machines, and running hours are a poor predictor of when they will need attention.
What drives wear
- Gas composition. Liquids carryover and particulates shorten valve life faster than anything else.
- Speed. Valve impact velocity scales with speed; a machine run at the top of its range works its valves proportionally harder.
- Design. Plate, ring and poppet designs behave differently on the same duty, and the right choice depends on the gas.
What to do about it
Track valve replacements per machine and per stage rather than per station. A single machine consuming a disproportionate share of valves is usually telling you about upstream separation, not about the valves.
Where a valve type is being replaced more often than the duty justifies, an alternative design is worth trialling on one cylinder before the fleet is changed.
